Project overview
VSmart Academy is one of India's best-known CA, CS, and CMA coaching brands, running since 2005. The classroom side was strong. The digital side was not. Their students were spread across 120+ physical centers, and most of them lived on a phone, but the learning was scattered across a website, a separate video tool, and study material sent who-knows-where. We came in as their EdTech app development partner and built one cross-platform app that pulls live classes, on-demand video lectures, study material, the test series, and mentorship into a single place a student actually opens every day.
The problems we had to fix
Learning split across three tools
A student watched a lecture in one place, took a mock test in another, and dug for study material somewhere else again. Every switch was a chance to give up, and plenty did. Course completion suffered for it.
Content that had to reach 120+ centers
Video, study material, and live classes all needed to land at 120+ centers at the same quality, on the same day. Doing that by hand, center by center, was never going to hold as the student count climbed.
A web-only experience on a phone-first audience
Almost everyone learned on a phone, and the old web-only setup was built for a desktop nobody was using. So engagement fell apart on the exact screen most of the studying actually happened on.
What we built into the EdTech app
One app for the whole journey
Live classes, recorded lectures, study material, the test series, and mentorship, all under one login. No more bouncing between tools to do one evening of studying.
Live and on-demand video
Live classes run on WebRTC, so a student can ask a doubt and get it cleared right there in the session. Alongside that sits a library of 261+ on-demand courses you can download and watch with no signal.
An integrated test series
Mock tests with automatic grading and per-student performance analytics, plus question difficulty that adjusts to where a student actually is. The point was to turn practice into a feedback loop, not just a score at the end.
A multi-center admin
One dashboard runs content for all 120+ centers, with role-based access so a center head, a faculty member, and head office each see and change only what they should.
A student progress dashboard
Course completion, test scores, attendance, and what to study next, all in one view. A student knows where they stand, and so does the mentor sitting across from them.

How do you handle video streaming at scale in an EdTech app?
On-demand lectures go through AWS CloudFront, so the bytes come from a server near the student. Live classes run on WebRTC. Both use adaptive bitrate, which is the part that actually matters in India, because a student on a patchy 4G connection in a Tier 3 town still needs the lecture to play without buffering every thirty seconds.
How long does it take to build an EdTech app like this?
We shipped a working first version in about 12 weeks, with video lectures, course navigation, and the student dashboard. Live classes, the test series, and offline downloads came in the sprints after that. For a fresh exam prep app of this shape, plan on a similar 3 to 5 months to a real launch.
